Minutes to the Meeting February 7, 2007 12:00 p.m. Location: Indiana University Southeast Library Attendance: Kelley Abney, Krystal Angevine, Jose Becerra, Donna Jenkins, Lillian Rose, Father Tom Smith, Nancy Totten, Michelle Turner Acting/Interim President Lillian Rose called the meeting to order. 2. Minutes for the January 2007 meeting: Correction by Fr. Tom, Item 6 needs to read as SIABC (Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition) rather than ALC. Fr. Tom moved to accept Minutes as corrected, Nancy Totten seconded, and the Minutes were approved as corrected. Treasurers Report: Tabled until March meeting. 4. Health Fair/Feria de Salud: Event is set for Sunday April 15, 2007 at the St. Marys school gymnasium, from 3:15-5:00 pm. Melissa Schwartz at Floyd Memorial Hospital (FMH) is coordinating with Krystal for the event. (Thank you, Melissa!!) The group discussed the following items: Set up times will be set closer to the event date Lillian mentioned that she went to the Outreach Coalition meeting, and there was great interest in the Fair by that group, and service providers consider this to be a premier event. Providence High Schools Spanish Club called Fr. Tom and inquired about how to get involved, he suggested bike donation project; Krystal A. will check on bike helmet donation from hospital, as in past. Students could also assist in serving refreshments and set up/cleanup. Krystal has flyer that can be used to solicit bikes from grade schools and will forward to Fr. Tom. (This was done in past and could set up drop-off site for donations.) * Immunizations by Health Dept/Family Health Center? Difficult per Krystal, due to apprehension of children, would need separate area/room and access to freezer for serum, Fr. Tom can check on this. Volunteers: Krystal has prepared list of volunteers and Committee Leaders for each area, additional Leaders are needed! Marketing: Leah Meek at IUS has offered to assist with interviews to see what the Fair attendees want to see, and how to reach Hispanics with information. Marketing should be in one persons hands, and a Committee Leader in this area is needed. Nancy Totten will check with the IUS marketing classes to see whether they would like to take this on as a project. Decorations: Need Committee Leader in this area too. E.g., balloons, table covers, thankyou/survey cards for tables, signs, and bottled water for booth sponsors, hats for interpreters. Greeter team: To distribute bags and door prize tickets, and helping agencies find tables to set up. Outside Vendors, should HC allow???? Calls had been received requesting booth space. After much discussion, the meeting attendees decided that any vendors/businesses calling to inquire about booth space can be offered opportunity to buy an ad in the Health Fair Program and then directed to Fiesta for booth at that time. Outside vendors can also provide brochures concerning their product/service and an unmanned table with those brochures can be provided. Health Fair Program with listing of all booth participants is needed this would be Marketing Committees responsibility. Set deadline of April 1st for booklet. Disaster Preparedness Course: This is an online course offered by the Dept of Homeland Security, Lillian has more info for those interested. 5. Old Business: * Tax season (SIABC) and at Hispanic Ministry office. Fr. Tom reported that a number of people are going to the SIABCs site and several people are using the individual at the HMs office for tax form preparation, with $10 from each preparation staying with the HM. * Networking Event Update: Tabled until next months meeting. * Guia: It is completed and Fr. Tom, then Lillian, will be reviewing it. We have an offer from a business to publish it free of charge. It was suggested that the Guia be available for distribution at the Health Fair in April. * Website Update: Fr. Tom will take over the task of updating the HC site (www.hispanicconnectionsi.org). 6. New Business: * Greater Clark County Schools/Project Wisdom Reader: Lillian was a guest reader this morning, and volunteers are welcome to read on Friday 3/2/07 2-2:30 for the Read Across America program. See Lillian for info. * Fr. Tom stated that the donation from the New Albany Rotary, which had been reported at the January meeting as a $250 donation actually resulted in a $600 donation. Our thanks to the Rotarians!! Fr. Tom asked for someone from the HC to attend the Rotarys 2/22 lunch meeting and give a short presentation to their organization. Donna Jenkins volunteered to do so. * Lillian will be making a presentation concerning the activities of the HC to another group (?) and will be accompanied by Letty Salazar. * Election for President at next meeting. * Dues Reminder! * Lillian is writing weekly column for the Evening News.
